I do what I do because…

Last Sunday was like just any Sunday and I was worshipping the Lord corporately.

As usual with hands lifted high in worship when suddenly I heard this inner voice questioning me…

“Why are you lifting your hands?”

“How come you are so excited in praising and worshipping?”

“Are you doing it because others are doing it? Or has it become a ‘protocol’?”

I paused for that moment trying to think of those answers. And it eventually came flowing with reverberance from the depths of my heart…

I do what I do because I worship a living and loving God; my Lord, my God. I have surrendered my life to You and will give my utmost praise.

From that moment, my worship went up the experiencial intimacy scale with God.

I love You Lord =)

Get the real thing

“Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists.

A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex.

If I find myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud.

Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only arouse it, to suggest the real thing.”

~ CS Lewis from Mere Christianity

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

Give Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple (who brought you the iPhone) and PIXAR Animation your 15 minutes and listen to his inspiring speech.

May it inspire faith and courage to live a life that is full as it was meant to be.

STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH.

The launch of the DR

When I first heard about the launch of the Discipleship Roadmap (DR) in church, I was amazed of its timeliness. It came just as God showed me His ‘system’ of discipleship- “The 21st Century ACTS man” which was in my previous entry.

Personally I find this DR extremely detailed and macham a job appraisal especially with the Personal Assessment Form which is good cos we need a pragmatic approach in being motivated to grow spiritually.

Indeed the DR is a very effective tool for a good spiritual check-up as it even recommends a range of “remedies” after diagnosing. And in a way the ‘system’ is now completed with the aid of the DR. Praise God! =p

Kudos to Hope’s Education staff team for their long hours of research and hard work putting this DR together!

National Stadium Closing Ceremony

I was presented with two complimentary grandstand tickets to the National Stadium Closing Ceremony that was held last Saturday (30 June).

It was touted to be the grandest of grandest ceremony for this Grand Old Lady. But sadly, the stuff didn’t quite matched up with the buzz.

Hey… there were other Singaporeans who gave similar comments as I leh….

First, Singapore played more like cats then lions to visitors Australia. And we lose 0 – 3. But of cos it was a treat to see the likes of Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell in flesh.

Below was the closest shot I could get of Harry Kewell, player for Liverpool FC.

Secondly was the let-down by the programme. Besides the Singapore versus Australia match, the rest were not fitting for a closing ceremony. Really CMI.

Lastly was the most anticipated fireworks. But I tell you that the fireworks went off in a fizzle. It was executed in an unglam manner and worse, only 2-3 minutes. It looked like a low-budget production.

I think even our IMF foreign delegates were treated with better fireworks at the Esplanade when they visited us. Apa ini….

But okay lar… free tickets so shouldn’t make so much noise rite? =p

Anyway I got to see the cauldron being lighted up for the first time and sat at the grandstand watching soccer for the first (and the last) time.

Good bye National Stadium, See you Sports Hub.

Our God is a personal god

“O LORD, you have searched me
    and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

You hem me in—behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.”

Psalm 139:1-6 (NIV)

My “Honey Stars” story

Whenever I see or eat “Honey Stars” which is a type of cereal by Nestle, I am reminded of God’s love for me. And it was during the first breakfast in Melaka camp that I ate my “Honey Stars”.

Let me share the story…

In 2002, I attended a Thai camp- “Faith Church” at Bangkok. One of the nights I was hungry and went snooping around in a 24hr shop looking for something to eat. However, I didn’t have much Baht with me and if I recalled correctly, that was all I had left for the remaining trip.

Finally after much snooping, I calculated that I had enough to buy a pack of Nestle Honey Stars and a packet of milk. But just when I was deciding to buy, the Holy Spirit gave me the idea to use whatever Baht I had left to buy small gifts for my CG back then.

After much deliberation, that night I slept with an unsatisfied stomach but a joyful spirit.

On the last day, Pastor PN announced that one of the camp sponsors was providing breakfast for the foreign delegates who were leaving Thailand the next morning. I didn’t think much of it.

The next morning as I dragged my sleepy feet to collect my breakfast, guess what was breakfast?

That’s right! Breakfast was a pack of Honey Stars and a packet of milk!

It was exactly what I had initially wanted to buy. But now God somehow bless me with it!

When I think of it, I know it was no coincidence. I mean what were the chances of such a coincidence?!

There were so many range of food that could have been sponsored but we were served with Nestle cereal in Thailand. Plus it came with a packet of milk! Just exactly as I had desired.

Becos no one else knew about it, only God knew.I can only conclude that this simple miraculous gesture was God’s way of telling me that He loves me and cares for my every need.

God spoke

My post-camp entry…

I went for camp with much anticipation to hear from God. And He spoke…

1.   Stewardship aspect: G.S.S. or “God, Save and Spend”…. This will be a habit I will adopt from now. Presently, my money habit has been “God and Spend” and no “Save”. But now, it is time to start saving. Yipee… Can’t wait!

Build a bigger “storehouse” to contain His blessings (finances) when He pours them down. How much blessings I can receive from the Lord is dependent on how big my “storehouse” is, for Him to bless. Enlarge through various creative means such as investment or business.

2.   BGR aspect: Put 100% heart into it and not just doing the form. Its not about the doing but the being.

3.   Discipleship aspect: More deliberation in being discipled and to disciple future leaders within CG and with sheeps.

4.   Personal apsect: Grow intimacy with God through my “pathways”- worship, creation and activism. These are my main ones with a somewhat contemplative streak in me too.

So far since the Melaka camp, I have been trudging along with God in stretching in these aspects and more.

Tough sia…

But He must be more and I must be less.

The real reason behind the reason

“The second reason is economic. When the birth rate drops below replacement, the population ages. With fewer working people to support more retired people, it puts a crushing tax burden on the smaller group of working age people. As a result, young people delay marriage and having a family. Once this trend starts, the downward spiral only gets worse. These countries have abandoned all the traditions they formerly held in regards to having families and raising children.

The U.S. birth rate is 2.0, just below replacement. We have an increase in population because of immigration. When broken down by ethnicity, the Anglo birth rate is 1.6 (same as France) while the Hispanic birth rate is 2.7. In the U.S., the baby boomers are starting to retire in massive numbers. This will push the “elder dependency” ratio from 19 to 38 over the next 10-15 years. This is not as bad as Europe, but still represents the same kind of trend.

Western civilization seems to have forgotten what every primitive society understands; you need kids to have a healthy society. Children are huge consumers. Then they grow up to become taxpayers. That’s how a society works, but the post-modern secular state seems to have forgotten that. If U.S. birth rates of the past 20-30 years had been the same as post-World War II, there would be no Social Security or Medicare problems.”

Excerpt from an article- A Global Intelligence Briefing for CEOs by Herbert Meyer

Just a few days ago, CNA reported the impending change in the CPF policy to permit Singaporeans to withdraw their CPF minimum of $100K only when they have reached the age of 65. This is another increase from 62 with the original permitted age being 55.

Mr Lim Swee Say was quoted in the report saying:

“25 years ago our life expectancy was less than 70 years old. Today, 25 years later, our life expectancy is about 80 years old. I’m very sure that 25 years from now, our life expectancy could be 85 or 90 years old. So we have to ask these very tough questions… will Singaporeans have enough savings and earnings to see him or her through this longer life span? If the answer is yes, then none of us need to worry, but I don’t think the answer is yes.”

Personally, Mr Lim’s statement gives the impression that the gahmen is doing us a favour by extending the age policy in order we can save enough for our lives. But since when has it been the gahmen’s priority to be concern if we are saving enough for our lives?

And to be honest, Mr Lim’s reasoning in favour of the impending policy change isn’t all that convincing:

“If you continue to have an income, you can defer drawing your CPF by another two to four years. This way, by the time you really stop working, there will be more money in your CPF. You can also earn interest in your CPF account.”

Duh….

If we relate our situation with Herbert Meyer’s theory from the excerpt, then the rational behind this impending policy change could be due to the lack of babies that Singaporeans are producing. More Singaporeans equal more taxes. So in order to ease the tax burden on the younger age people which might be us or our children, the retirement age is extended.

As the US are navigating their way through a social security crisis with their baby boomers and 401K , I believe our gahmen are watching them closely and taking steps to avoid a similar plight. Hence, this highlights the gahmen’s changed of stance in 2004 to encourage more babies in Singapore.

I wonder what would the response be from the Singapore baby boomers if they knew the real reason behind the reason?
