HCMC: Land Without a Vision

As I was walking along the streets in District 1 (similar to Singapore’s Orchard Road), this street kid unexpectedly approached and begged me.

“1 dollar (USD) please… 1 dollar please… I want to eat”

“No. I don’t have”

My firmed reply fell on deaf ears as it didn’t seem to deter him and he actually followed me for another good 1 km as I walked on.

This kid was really persistent. (!?)

Feeding with Fish or Teaching to Fish

Wanting to practice wise giving (for you never know what the money is really used for), I thought it more beneficial that aid was not given for the reason not to encourage begging from someone who was young and completely healthy.

If he always got his way, then he would rely on this (begging) and would not want to work and be an asset to society.

Was I being heartless by not readily parting with a meager USD1?

I am for one, a believer in this principle: Give a man a fish, you feed for a day. Teach a man how to fish, you feed him for life.

Eventually God provided an alternative without compromising my principle. I bought him two buns which he gleefully accepted and went away with.

Land without Vision

The next day, I had an opportunity to hang out with some neighbourhood kids. They were such angels. However, after feeling happy with the time spent with them, I was shortly overcame with sadness when I thought about their future.

Judging (based on a general observation) from the common way of life, culture and political influence in HCMC, one would be able to foretell the paths that these kids would be walking towards. They would be following their parents’ footsteps and doing what everybody else is doing in general- contentment in merely surviving and living by in order to make ends meet.

Though this kind of living is not wrong and is found in almost every society including Singapore, but in HCM City where the standards of living is underdeveloped, it is disheartening to observed how the people were not inspired, led and taught towards a better quality of life for themselves and their families. At least in Singapore, we have a general vision of attaining the 5 c’s. This so-called vision, has somewhat driven our nation over the years to excel and thrive to what we are today.

In my personal opinion, it is because the people in HCMC have not be shown any sort of long-term vision of what life could and can be, apart from the life they now know. Thus, the endless similar cycle of low-quality living.

Much Needed Shepherds

“When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”

The above verse from Matthew 9:36, best describes the state of this city. The people especially their children (the future generation) needs to be mentored and trained in order that they might be the future leaders for their country and society.

Hopefully, more leaders will lead the way for the people towards an alternative way of life that was meant to be.

HOPE: Our Global Network

In a “divine coincidence”, I got to meet a Korean couple from Hope London (seen in between the two ladies in picture) that were in HCMC for the week to open a representative office in this city.

The brother, Mr Hyongsuk Kim was so friendly and was enthused in sharing with me about his business- M-BIZ Global Company Limited and how he and his wife got it started two years ago. They are in the gaming software business for mobile handsets and have Samsung as one of their major clients under their belt.

Interestingly, he shared how with the amount they were paying for one staff in the UK, they could actually hire 10 staff in HCM City.

Wow… that is really cost-effective!

Besides spending a wonderful time over lunch, we accompanied them the whole day in search of a suitable office in the city. And thankfully, they found one on the same day that they had to fly off.

But when I think of how we managed to get to know and encouraged one another in another country, I am very much thankful to God for our global network in Hope and with such an extensive family that I belong to.

Indeed, God’s seed vision for our Hope International Movement is growing and actualising over the years since its pioneering days.

Thank God For HOPE

HOPE Singapore turned sweet 16 over the weekend and that accounts to 7 remarkable years with this church family and counting more ahead!

I can still recall the first time that I ‘blur blur’ stepped into a Hope service which was held at the Kreta Ayer Theatre.

My initial thoughts were, “Is this a church or some cult??” (=P)

I guess back then I was accustomed to the concept that a church service was to be held in some churchy building and not a shoddy and run-down theatre hall =p

But back again to my first step-in experience. Well, I think I can candidly say that life for me has never been the same again!

Why? Cos here I not only met God, but grew to know and love Him even more.

But of cos, Hope does have her shortcoming and imperfections, but one cannot doubt her commitment towards God, His word and His vision. And this can be consistently observed through our leaders’ lives especially our Pastors.

Thank God for their sacrificial lives! Cos without Hope, I dare to say that I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Thank God for Hope, for touching and changing my life!

NOTE: This is not a Hope membership recruitment exercise. Ha!

When God smiles…

Nothing beats the feeling of knowing that God is please with you.

I was thinking affectionately of God as I was reflecting upon life and the challenges that laid before while waiting for my bus in the morning.

When suddenly I ‘saw’ an image of God’s (Jesus) face wearing a warm smile. And He was smiling down at me!

From my inner voice, I heard these words to me: “My child, I am pleased with you.”

Wow… nothing gives me a better kick than to put a smile on His Face with all that I am and with all that I do for Him.

Daddy God, I love You =)

My HopeKids Blooper

Last Sunday during HopeKids Live while acting in a skit, I made a horrendous blooper!

Instead of saying “Game Boy” the Nintendo hand-held game set, out of my mouth came “Play Boy” (!!!!??!!!)

And some of the kids went, “Oooorrrhhhh…”

Ha! But I think they thought the mistake I made was referring “Play Boy” as a person and not the brand/product since they too young to know. (I think, I hope!)

*gulps* =P

Falling Deeper in Love with God

Lately much things have taken some toll on me mainly in regards to ministry- leading and serving others around me.

And my God never fails to strengthen me with His gentle but powerful words like Jeremiah 12:5.

He has once again, lifted my eyes beyond the present situation and to help me see how this part fits in His bigger plans for me in His will.

Now at least can take what I have with a lighter heart and abit more joy since it is just His part of preparing me for what is ahead in time to come.

Thank you God for being with me =)

“For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him,” 2 Chronicles 16:9

My prayer:

God help me not to stop falling in love with you. I want to fall deeper in love with you with each new day. Consume me with your love and experience your love anew. Amen.

Persevering with the bigger picture ahead

“[But the Lord rebukes Jeremiah’s impatience, saying] If you have raced with men on foot and they have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses?

And if [you take to flight] in a land of peace where you feel secure, then what will you do [when you tread the tangled maze of jungle haunted by lions] in the swelling and flooding of the Jordan?”

Jeremiah 12:5 (Amplified Bible)

Where is the love?

I hopped on a cab to church yesterday from Clementi. And as usual, I gave the cab driver my destination and directions.

“Uncle, Orchard Road. Please go by AYE and exit out of Clemenceu Road”

With that, I sat back and did what I enjoyed best- “stoning”.

Not long after, I realised that the cab driver made a wrong exit. Instead of Clemenceu Road, he actually exited prematurely from the AYE and entered Clementi Road again?!

Upset I questioned him and pointed out to him with much irritation what I had originally instructed. But apparently he mistakenly heard me saying Clementi and not Clememceu. Duhz….

Eventually, we had to take another route to Orchard.

Where was the love of Christ in me?

But just as I was quick to react, the Holy Spirit gave me a jab in my heart; seemingly disapproving my attitude.

Oops… I was impatient and oblivious to the feelings of the cab driver who could easily be tired from having to wake up early to work 24/7 and at his age ( maybe over 50 years old), life was already stressful enough with increased 2% GST, later withdrawl of CPF funds and the recent stock market volatility. (=P)

As I recollected that God is for the people; with a contrite heart I sought His forgiveness and I repented of my ill-spirit.

I need more of His love.

God-sent ‘Angels’

Last night there was an unexpected knocked on my door. I was expecting to be greeted by a salesman, but was surprised by the sight of two female strangers.

As I hid behind my door in my under-dressed state, I asked, “Can I help you?”

One of the girls replied, “Can we pray for you for any blessings?”

Taken slightly aback, I was able to identify them as members of Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC) when I saw the “100K”  mini-brochure she was holding as I recalled reading in Ming Chun’s blog his 100K adventures.

100K

Greedily Readily I answered, “Ya why not…” and I proceeded to tick the blessings which I needed that were indicated on that mini-brochure:

  • Health
  • Protection
  • Family Harmony
  • Financial Freedom
  • Progress in Career
  • Friendships and Relationships
  • Wisdom and Intelligence
  • Direction for the Future
  • Fullness of the Holy Spirit

After this whole 100K thingy was over, other than being encouraged of the good work that this church was doing, I didn’t think much about it.

It was not till I was to turn in for the night that I realised that the 100K blessing was a miracle from God. Cos out of all the days, it had to be on MY BIRTHDAY that these two sisters came, and moreover I was AT HOME at that time!

Wah… Thank God for those two ‘angels’ who He sent to bless me and remind me of His love for me =)

Missions through a global marketplace

Last week, it was a privilege for me to have attended an exceptional wonderful training over the course of two days (Friday & Saturday).

The trainer was Mr Joseph Chean, Base Director from Youth With A Mission- YWAM (pronounced as Y- WAM) and the topic was related to preparation in being a team leader for short-term mission trips.

Singapore, an Antioch

In one part of his rousing sharing, he told us why he was convicted that Singapore was the Antioch of Asia; a platform where west meets east, and east meets west. This means, if you want to get a jumpstart into penetrating the East, Singapore would serve as the springboard for the west. And this works similarly the other way.

I couldn’t agree more with his observation as which other country in Asia stands with Singapore in being bilingual in language- English and Mandarin (thru our educational system); with her western culture and influence; but still retaining her eastern heritage and values.

Even businesses use Singapore as a springboard to penetrate the east because of her strong links and regional (and global) connectivity, what more do we have to say about God’s business- MISSIONS.

As a Singaporean, we can gain access into many countries world-wide without a VISA in comparison to our counterparts. That itself is a divine privilege!

Marketplace influence

He further attributed Singapore’s phenomenal growth to her strong establishment in the marketplace- (1) Business or commerce, (2) Media, (3) Arts, (4) Government, (5) Education, (6) Healthcare, Science and Technology.

And he accredited this growth to the contributions of Christians that were represented and positively influencing for God in all these ‘pillars’ of the marketplace that built this nation.

It was encouraging when he urged the class not to belittle the work that we had in the marketplace as this is our God-given role to usher God’s glory into this world. And regardless whether a church full-time job or a secular full-time job, one is never greater than the other as both are the same in their spirituality and purpose in building His Church.

My reflections

In retrospect, I now see more clearly why some 6 years ago God had led me to study then when in fact I was more eager to plunge either full-time in the church or to go church-planting. In His wisdom, He was (and is) equipping me to be a far more effective ‘instrument’ to influence and impact for the future.

With God working through globalisation, I am more convinced and empowered in wanting to do my part in building His Church through the marketplace as a global Christian.
