Arnold’s Living His Dream

I never did know the famous Arnold Schwarzenegger beyond his huge on-screen persona. Hence, reading his rags-to-riches story was very refreshing and inspiring. I have reproduced an extract of his compelling story here as a fine example of a life striving forward in accomplishing one’s dream.

Arnold wasn’t sure of what he wanted to do, but he knew it wasn’t following his father’s footsteps in law enforcement. It wasn’t for a lack of trying to find his dream. he had ambition. In fact, one thing he did know was that he wanted to be the best in the world at whatever he chose.

He loved athletics, but in his mid-teens, he still hadn’t found the right sport. He tried many; ice curling, boxing, running and field events such as javelin and shot put.

For five years, he played soccer but no strong passion for it. Then one day his soccer coach asked the team to start lifting weights once a week to improve their conditioning. It was then his dream began to take shape.

“I still remember that first visit to the body building gym,” he recalls, “I had never seen anyone lifting weights before. Those guys were powerful looking. And there it was before me- my life, the answer I’d been seeking. It clicked. It was something I suddenly just seemed to reach out and find, as if I’d been crossing a suspended bridge and finally stepped off onto solid ground.”

At age fourteen, Arnold Schwarzenegger had found his passion in gymnasium. But not everyone understood his dream- certainly not his parents or friends he grew up with.

“I could not have chosen a less popular sport,” Arnold explains, “My school friends thought I was crazy. But I didn’t care. I found the things to which I wanted to devote my total energies and there was no stopping. My drive was unusual; I talked differently than my friends; I was hungrier for success than anyone I knew.”

In his relentless pursuit of his dream, Arnold began working working out for hours at a time, six days a week. His dream was to become the best built man in the world.

At the age of eighteen while he served his mandatory year in Austria army, he won the Junior Mr. Europe, his first major competition. The next year he won Mr. Europe. He moved to Munich and kept working and obtained part of ownership in a gym there.

Later in 1967, he won the Mr. Universe amateur contest in London. He was only twenty years old, and his victory astounded everyone. When he called his parents to tell them of his success, they were less than excited.

Despite the lack of support for his career choice, Arnold went on to win every major body building competition in the world, including the prestigious Mr. Olympia contest an incredible seven times, the last in 1980.

But becoming the world’s greatest body builder- an amazing accomplishment in itself- was not Arnold’s only dream. Many people were shocked when he was able to turn his body building prowess into a successful movie career. Years later, they were flabbergasted when he ran for governor of California- and won.

What many people didn’t know that Arnold had dreamed of such things since his early days in Austria. At age twenty, he told his friend, “I want to win the Mr. Universe many times like Reg [Park, his idol]. I want to become a billionaire. And I want to go into politics.”

Arnold has lived his dreams. He became Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia many times. He’s made many movies, with his films earning more than $1.6 billion! He’s been a highly successful businessperson. Since the early days in the United States, he’s been disciplined saver and a wise investor in real estate, stocks and businesses. (He’s not quite a billionaire yet; it’s estimated that his net worth is only $800 million.) He is a political leader.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has owned his dream, and as a result, he has been highly successful.

Miracles Do Happen When You Believe

Two months ago, I met Fabien.

At that point of his life, he was at the brink of depression and was suicidal.

He had already attempted suicide four times and was eventually warded at Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

Facing pressing problems

Fabien is divorced with two kids- 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son. Both of them are under his ex-wife’s custody.

Being unemployed for two years, he has never been able to keep up with the alimony payments.

If you think that is bad, it could only get worse.

His dad had also passed away last year and left a huge pile of bills from the housing unit for him to shoulder alone. He’s the elders and both of his siblings are currently serving their jail terms.

Understandably, he was hard pressed and cornered by his circumstances.

But that was two months ago before He decided to hand over his life with its problems to God.

The miracles that happened

Now and most recently, he is gainfully employed. It was an answered prayer that saw his specific request of the salary package and working schedule met.

Prior to this employment, he had experienced several miraculous incidents within two months. But I will just recount two of them on his behalf.

The first was when the PUB decided to terminate his water supply after failing to make due payment. On that same day, his neighbour whom he barely knew and who had just moved into the neighbourhood two months ago, approached Fabien.

His neighbour had kindly offered to pay the entire utilities bill. That amount was about $500 and was paid in full without conditions.

That day, his water supply was re-connected on the same day it was terminated.

The second miracle happened two weeks after that.

He received a letter from the North West Community Development Centre (CDC) that included a cheque of $250 as part of a financial assistance scheme to help him through this period.

In the letter, it stated that he would be receiving this amount for three months. On top of the that, CDC would also be subsidising a substantial amount for his housing bills such as utilities and maintenance.

The miracle was that Fabien did not apply for any financial assistance scheme and the cheque appeared at a time when he most needed it.

More miracles ahead

Fabien now carries a totally different countenance; one that is hopeful.

Last Saturday, he witnessed yet another miracle when his ex-wife whom he invited to a church service with him, responded in becoming a Christian.

I truly believe that there are more good stuff that is heading Fabien’s way now that he has decided to follow God. Because He is a God that truly loves us and has the best plans for us.

Not sure about you, but I believe in miracles and the God that performs them.

If you’re presently in a trying situation especially with the recession, I hope Fabien’s miracle story will encourage you. Because your situation could be an opportunity for your miracle to show up.

The question is, Would you believe and trust God enough to hand it (your situation) over to Him? “

More Testimonies on Answered Prayers

Brother Boon Yeong is a friend of mine who has been a Christian for less than a year.

I would like to share two of his  most recent personal experiences with answered prayers from God.

Do read on below and be not only encouraged, but start praying too!

1. Finding my home

Since last November, I had been looking for a home to buy in Johor Bahru for my family.

For a long time, I was not able to find any that met my requirements. They have been either too small, too costly or the location was not ideal.

Till then, I did not pray to God for His help. However, the situation changed when I decided to pray.

I was led to list down the criteria of my new home. After listing them down, I committed them to God in prayer. In total, I listed 14 of them.

The next day, my prayer was incredibly answered. Through an estate agent, I found my new home which met all but one of my lists of criteria that I had listed the night before.

Wow…. I was amazed by the almost immediate effect of my prayer for my new home!

2. My job conversion

I joined AT&T as a contract staff. After a year, I was encouraged to apply for a full-time position in last September as there  was available headcount then. I applied and had committed it to God in prayer.

I waited for a month. No news. Another month past, still no news. I became impatient and this time I asked my cell group to pray for me.

In my heart, I was hoping that my conversion to a full-time position would go through in December. But still there was no update.

In January, I received discouraging news that the conversion would not take place due to recession. I was disappointed that my prayers were not answered.

How come God did not answer my prayer? Was it because I was not sincere enough in my prayer?

After some time, I realised I should consider myself fortunate since there are many people who have been retrenched in this recession. That changed perspective led me from being disgruntled to become grateful.

I thanked God for His providence and pledged my love and loyalty to Him in regardless of the circumstances. I continued to persist in my prayers for the conversion.

Finally, last month (February) I was greeted with an unexpected news. I received news that my position was successfully converted to a full-time one!

These two experiences with God have taught me to be patient and to submit my plans to Him. As God is always in control, His timing is always perfect; never too early and never too late; just in time. He is faithful.

Stepping Out and Shining Forth

Next on our list of “Jesus in the Marketplace Series” is singing artiste Sun Ho who serves as Music Ambassador for the Olympics Songfest for Beijing 2008. She needs little introduction as she is also widely known as the wife of Kong Hee, Senior Pastor of City Harvest Church. In a recent cover interview story with VANILLA magazine, she shares her reasons in moving from the church into the arts & entertainment world. Here’s an extract…

It was not a sudden departure or an uncalculated decision. It took a lot of me to make the decision to move into the secular pop industry because that had many implications and affected many parts of my life and ministry as the wife of a prominent church leader.

Many didn’t understand why I had to do it, and I am aware that some still wonder what my motives are: Am I desperate for fame or fortune? Anyone who knows me would know that money and recognition have never been and will never be the motivation for anything I set forth to accomplish in my life.

Kong and I thought long and hard before I finally decided to step beyond the four walls of the church. As head counsellor and music director, I was so happy serving and helping people with broken lives and hearts. To step into the music industry, a world so familiar to me, was very hard.

One of the questions that I have always asked myself and, in a real sense, built all my counselling and humanitarian efforts on is: “Can one make a difference?”

Helping others has always been a life-long passion in my heart. Ever since the day I was led out of depression by faithful friends who stood with me through my darkest times, I made a decision to use the second chance that I had been given to help others in the same way.

In the past, being a counsellor based within the church, the hurt and the broken had to come into the church to look for my assistance. One day I was given the opportunity to sing a secular song, and I was debating it when a friend said something that tipped the balance: “With counselling, you help one person at a time. With your voice and music, you have the chance to impact and influence hundreds and thousands!”

Many are skeptical about why I am in the industry. In truth, I believe that, as a Christian, my responsibility is to help and serve others, and to contribute to the society that I belong in, wherever I may go, with whatever I have in my hands.

In my case, it would be to sing and perform, something that I’ve done all my life, since the time I was a child singing and dancing in front of my mother, making her laugh out loud and de-stressing her!

Using my voice and talent is how I hope to make the world a better place in my own small way- singing songs of hope and love, strength and a future in the midst of imperfect situations, connecting with the youth of today and, hopefully, inspiring them to believe in themselves and the dreams that they have.

Christianity through Arts and Creativity

In this second installment of “Jesus and the marketplace” series, Makota Fujimura is a Christian artist who paints Christ-centred arts. He lives and works in New York City, and is an elder in a Presbyterian Church.

Makoto FujimuraThere are no crosses in Makoto Fujimura’s paintings. No images of Jesus gazing into the distance, or serene scenes of churches in a snow-cloaked wood.

. . . After the 2001 terrorist strikes on the World Trade Centre, three blocks from Fujimura’s home, his work explored the power of fire to both destroy and purify, themes drawn from the Christian Gospels and Dante’s “The Divine Comedy.”

“I am a Christian,” says Fujimura, 46, who founded the non-profit International Arts Movement to help bridge the gap between the religious and art communities. “I am also an artist and creative, and what I do is driven by my faith experience.

“But I am also a human being living in the 21st century, struggling with a lot of brokenness _ my own, as well as the world’s. I don’t want to use the term ‘Christian’ to shield me away from the suffering or evil that I see, or to escape in some nice ghetto where everyone thinks the same.”

By making a name for himself in the secular art world, Fujimura has become a role model for creatively wired evangelicals. They believe that their churches have forsaken the visual arts for too long – and that a renaissance has begun.

Soccer-Pro Scores for Jesus in EPL

Proudly presenting the first story for “Jesus and the Marketplace” series that will hopefully inspire and empower us, Christ-followers to live our faith relevantly and powerfully in our marketplace. Here’s Linvoy Primus’ testimony told by Jeremy Wilson for The Guardian.

Linvoy Primus

Primus was 27 when he found his faith and is convinced that the correlation between that event and a dramatic improvement in his football career is no coincidence. The likes of Sol Campbell, Glen Johnson and Lauren have joined Portsmouth over the past year but he remains an automatic choice in a team who have been in the Premiership’s top six all season. Among Pompey supporters he is the club’s most popular player.

“I know that, win, lose or draw, life will still carry on,” he said. “I do my job properly and to the best of my ability because God wouldn’t want me to misuse the gift he has given me.”

His faith initially made him the subject of dressing-room banter but he never hid his beliefs and praying has now become routine for a growing group of Portsmouth players before matches. “The people who have found the Lord at this club have had their lives changed – Kanu, LuaLua, Sean Davis, Andy O’Brien, Benjani,” he said. “We are not scared to say we pray together before games. We’ve got the laundry room at the club – there’s two washing machines behind us and about 45 minutes before a game we link our arms and just pray that we can glorify God.”
